Police say Johnny Hurley, 40, confronted the gunman, identified as Ronald Troyke, after Troyke shot and killed Arvada police officer Gordon Beesley near Arvada’s Olde Town Square on Monday afternoon.

As Troyke ran to the square with a long shotgun, Hurley shot the suspect with a handgun, according to Arvada police.

“An Arvada Police Officer then met Mr Hurley, who was holding the suspect’s AR-15,” the statement said. “The officer shot him.”

“Arvada PD considers Mr Hurley’s actions heroic; it is clear that he intervened in an active midday shooting that happened quickly in a busy commercial area, and he did so without hesitation. Hurley have certainly saved others from serious injury or death,” Arvada Police said in the statement.

The shooting happened when Troyke’s brother called the Arvada police asking for benefits because he thought Troyke was “going to do something crazy,” the statement said.

Beesley and another officer conducted the welfare check but failed to locate Troyke, after which they were sent to Olde Town Square to check a report from a suspicious person, the statement said.

Surveillance video of the incident shows the suspect parking his truck behind Officer Beesley as he walks through a parking lot.

Troyke gets out of his truck with what the police describe as a 12-gauge semi-automatic shotgun. Troyke shot the 19-year-old veteran twice, according to police.

“Agent Beesley did not reach for his gun and take no defensive action – he simply turns around in response to the suspect, who then shoots and kills him,” the statement read.

The suspect then shot out the windows of nearby patrol cars before rushing back to his truck to retrieve his AR-15, and back to the plaza, according to the statement. Police say he was then shot by Hurley.

The police also confirm that they have recovered a note from Troyke containing numerous specific threats against the Arvada police.

“Today I will kill as many Arvada agents as possible,” and “I just hope I don’t die without killing one of your pigs,” according to police, were some of the threats outlined in the document.

Monday’s shooting incident has so far led to two separate investigations, with Arvada Police leading the investigation into Officer Beesley’s death. A multi-agency Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) is investigating Hurley’s deadly shooting, the statement said.

“We want to make it clear that although these two deaths occurred as part of the same incident, they are being investigated separately,” says Arvada PD.

“Finally it is clear that the suspect is responsible for this tragic sequence of events,” the department added.

Hurley’s family statement

Hurley’s family has released a statement released by the district attorney’s office.

“Our beloved son and brother Johnny is gone. We loved him dearly. May he rest in peace. Before Johnny reacted with a clear mind to a plight, he was already a wonderful human being with a great enthusiasm for life,” , it says in part in the statement.

“We are deeply moved by the community’s outpouring of love and are grateful for the support from the Arvada Police Department and their partners. We do not yet have all the information about what happened to Johnny and we look forward to learning more the outcome of a thorough and independent investigation.

“As a family, we ask that there be no speculation in the media while the facts are established. It does not help anyone. We ask that our privacy be respected while our grief is still so fresh. We ask that all questions from the media be directed to the first judicial district prosecutor’s office,” the statement said.
