The former San Francisco 49ers cornerback was detained at the King County Correctional Facility after being booked by the Redmond Police Department for 608 a.m., according to the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office. He would appear in court for the first time on Thursday.

In a statement, Redmond Police said officers located Sherman around 1:50 a.m. Wednesday after receiving a report that he was “attempting to break into a relative’s home.”

The house was the home of his in-laws, police said.

“Officers arrived and found Sherman outside the house,” the Redmond Police Department said. β€œThe suspect fought with officers while he was in custody, prompting a Redmond K9 team to be deployed to assist in gaining control.”

According to the statement, Washington State Patrol agents were also at the house to investigate a hit-and-run. A man was “suspected of abandoning his badly damaged vehicle and fleeing on foot” after hitting a concrete barrier off a State Route 520 exit before arriving at the home, police said.

State police said troopers went to the in-laws’ home after the damaged SUV was traced to Sherman and after learning that officers from Redmond had been called to the residence.

“Despite what is listed on the prison list as an ‘indictment,’ Mr. Sherman has not been charged with criminal charges,” the prosecutor’s statement said.

“Police … do not make allegations decisions in King County. Police refer investigations for impeachment decisions, and our office makes impeachment decisions after an independent review. In Redmond, our office handles felony cases.”

The prosecutor’s office is waiting for a first appearance document before making a decision to charge, the statement said.

Sherman, who is a free agent, is a vice president of the executive committee of the NFL Players Association.

β€œWe were notified last night of an arrest of one of our player leaders for an alleged domestic violence incident and have activated our Domestic Violence Crisis Protocol to protect and support everyone involved,” the spokesperson said. The union announced this via Twitter on Wednesday.

“We will continue to monitor events closely as more facts are made available to us.”

The NFL said in a statement to CNN: “Free agents may sign with any team. The league investigates any incident involving law enforcement officers and if the personal conduct policy is violated, the player may be punished.”

CNN is trying to reach Sherman for comment.

Sherman, a 33-year graduate of Stanford University, is a 10-year competitive veteran who played seven seasons with the Seattle Seahawks before joining the 49ers for the 2018 season.

He has played in five Pro Bowls.

Born in Compton, California, and raised in Los Angeles, Sherman is considered a elite corner back.

Sherman has been a representative of a players’ association since 2014, according to the association’s website. He was voted to the NFLPA’s executive committee in 2016 and re-elected in 2018 and 2020.
