Several people were killed and dozens more injured in separate shootings across the United States Friday night and early Saturday, just days after President Joe Biden met with a group of law enforcement officers, community groups, and state and local leaders to address the nationwide surge in violent crime.

The incidents in Houston, Philadelphia, Portland, Oregon, Sacramento, California and Washington, DC, come amid a years-long rise in national gun violence and register the sale of firearms.

Authorities investigating three of the attacks indicated that multiple weapons or gunmen were involved.

Biden spoke Monday about the increase in violent crime by encouraging communities to use $350 billion in state funding included in the Covid-19 relief plan to hire and pay officers for crime prevention.

Houston’s Galleria was the site of a Friday night attack that injured a man who was hit in the leg, authorities said. The suspected gunman fled to a parking garage, where an off-duty officer engaged in a shootout with the man, Houston Police Chief Troy Finner said.

The officer, a 5-year-old employee of the department, was not injured, the chief said. It is not clear whether the suspected gunman, who fled, was hit. He was still free, Finner said.

“It’s a sign of the times,” said the chief. “We just need to focus as a city on these violent criminals – knuckles. We have families in the mall. It makes no sense.”
