LANSING, Mich. – Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and the Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS) have announced that all Michigan auto insurance companies are granting refunds or waivers to consumers due to insurance companies’ reduced risk from extreme reductions in driving during COVID-19 pandemic.

“Michiganders have stayed safe and at home and they should see the benefit of reduced auto insurance rates during the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Governor Whitmer. “Every family is feeling additional financial strain as a result of this virus, and this order will provide much-needed relief for drivers.”

DIFS Order No. 2020-10-M sets a deadline of June 10, 2020 for insurers to submit applications containing the amount of the reimbursement or premium waiver, information on how that amount was determined and how consumers will receive payments. It also requires communication plans to inform customers about reimbursement and the options available to people with long-term changes in driving habits, such as those who have been laid off or telecommuting.

“This order ensures that all insurers provide appropriate refunds or waivers of premiums to their customers,” said Fox. “Consumers can realize additional savings by adapting their policy to their current driving behavior. Drivers should contact their agent to discuss car storage or make other changes to save on their premiums. “

DIFS can assist consumers with questions or disputes that cannot be resolved directly with their insurer. Contact DIFS Monday through Friday 8am to 5pm at 833-ASK-DIFS (275-3437) or by sending an email autoinsurance@michigan.gov.

The premium waivers or refunds are in addition to any savings resulting from the upcoming changes to Michigan’s auto insurance law, which has seen cuts in average statewide premiums for medical personal injury coverage for policies issued or renewed after July 1, 2020 Visit Michigan.gov/autoinsurance for more information about legislative changes, a scheme weekly town halls and instructional videos on how to fill in new forms.
