Liam Neeson takes the wheel in another do-or-die action role. This time he wrestles with big rig driver Mike, caretaker of his brother, Mechanic Gurty (Marcus Thomas), a war veteran who drives shotgun in the ice road.

They need a big reward and accept a perilous job: providing rescue equipment needed to free trapped diamond miners in northern Canada before they run out of oxygen. The fastest route is an ice road, closed for the season and in danger of thawing.

Two other 18-wheelers make up the ill-fated convoy: one driven by veteran haulage company owner Goldenrod (Laurence Fishburne), the other by the tough young Cree woman Tantoo (Amber Midthunder), whose brother Cody (Martin Sensmeier) is one of the miners.

It’s a thrilling ride from the get-go – no surprise considering the writer-director is action genre maestro Jonathan Hensleigh (Die hard with a vengeance, Armageddon). He calls the cast “troupers” for shooting on frozen Lake Winnipeg in February, one of two months the ice could carry the 20-ton oil rigs. (The temperature dropped to minus-24 degrees, so cold the actors could barely move their jaws to deliver lines!)

Brutal forces of nature aren’t the only obstacles sabotaging the brave drivers. Hints Hensleigh: “There is an element of corporate greed. When companies are looking for money, instead of people, things go bad. This is ultimate heroism – at great cost.” Brace yourself!

the ice road, Film premiere, Friday 25 June, Netflix
