It was April 2020 when Chase Smith was terminally diagnosed with three to five months to live. He didn’t listen to the numbers, but instead fought bravely and with great strength. He married his high school sweetheart Sadie (Mills) Smith, he held on to life and made memories, cherishing every day. Chase died on April 4, 2021 at his home with his family and beloved Sadie by his side. He was 19.
July 2014: Chase Smith, a nationally ranked swimmer, is at a national training camp when his left thigh starts to cramp. The cramps turn into pain and soon he can no longer do a simple leg lift. His parents, Brad and Kelli, notice swelling in his left thigh. Scans show a tumor on his thigh. At 13, Chase is diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma. After the treatment he is cancer free.

2016: At the age of 15, Chase faces his second battle with Ewing’s when a lump on his left leg is found in the same spot as the first. Chase is undergoing treatment and is cancer-free.
Winter of 2018: Chase meets Sadie Mills, an elite diver, briefly when her Mooresville High School team invites his Indian Creek team for dinner and an ice cream after their swim meeting.
April 2019: Chase is again diagnosed with cancer, this time a tumor the size of his heart on a lower lung. He is undergoing chemotherapy and radiation and is cancer free.
November 2019: Chase and Sadie start dating after Chase sees her at a swimming competition and gets her number. After their first date, Sadie tells her mom that Chase is her soul mate.
March, 2020: The cancer returns and attacks Chase’s shoulder, lung, back, and hip.
End of April 2020: Chase has severe pain in his left eye and on both sides of his temple. Scans show tumors all over his skull, in the fluid of his brain mucosa and around the pituitary gland. He is given three to five months to live.
April 29, 2020: After making plans to get married after college, Chase and Sadie get married as seniors in high school. The ceremony is held in the driveway of Sadie’s parents’ house, where she and Chase shared their first kiss.
May, 2020: Chase and Sadie’s love story amid terminal cancer captures the hearts of millions and theirs story spreads worldwide
June, 2020: Chase and Sadie trip to the Cleveland Clinic for the radiation treatment of Chase. A week later at Riley Hospital for Children, Chase receives the news that the cancer has spread. A tumor near his esophagus has grown rapidly. New tumors are found on his thyroid and adrenal glands and many more in his right lung.
End of June 2020: Chase and Sadie go to Palm Coast, Florida, at the request of Tim Tebow, who befriended Chase early in his journey to cancer. Tebow comes to their apartment to eat, play games, and pray with them.
July 3, 2020: On the sixth anniversary of his first cancer diagnosis, Chase felt very ill with joint pain and back cramps. He had little strength and spent most of the day in bed.
Mid-July 2020: Chase starts to feel a little better when certain medications are weaned, but in late July he is in pain again and finds that some of his tumors have grown.
August 2, 2020: The Indian Creek High School pool, where Chase grew up alongside his father, coach Brad Smith, and broke records as a swimmer, is being renamed the Chase M. Smith Natatorium.
September 29, 2020: Chase defies his 5-month forecast to life. He and Sadie join one of Chase’s favorite NFL players, former Colt long snapper Matt Overton. Chase eventually gives Overton, who also recently married, marriage advice.
December, 2020: Chase coaches the Indian Creek swim team for the season with his dad. “I’m so passionate about swimming, my mind goes 100% to it. My mind doesn’t allow me to think about anything but the child I’m coaching or the workout I’m writing or the relationship I’m building with. someone while I’m here, “he said at the meeting.” It’s definitely an escape from it all. ”
January 2021: Since Chase would receive radiation for cancer that had grown behind his eye, he broke his leg and had to undergo emergency surgery. Later in the month, after experiencing breathing problems, Chase found out he had COVID-19. Scans also showed that cancer had spread to his tailbone.
February 2021: Chase is allowed to attend Sadie’s first dive school at IUPUI. From the moment he found out his cancer was terminal, Chase said he wanted to make special memories with the people he loves during the time he’s left. When asked what it was like to be there and see Sadie, Chase paused and thought. “Very sweet.”
March 2021: Chase goes to the hospital and tests positive for an infection in his bloodstream. He also drained fluid that has accumulated from the tumors in his chest.

April 3, 2021: Kelli reveals that Chase is running out of time. In the past two days, things have gotten much worse with Chase. Currently, a wonderful angel with a hospice is here to help as Chase begins / continues his transition in our father’s arms, “she wrote on Facebook. I am extremely grateful that he will come into God’s arms and be completely healed. “
April 4, 2021: Chase Smith dies at his home in Bargersville at the age of 19 with his family and beloved Sadie by his side.
