Had the Dolphins not cleared the University of Miami in the first round of the 2021 NFL draft, the Broncos would have.
After the Broncos took the corner back Patrick Surtain II with the ninth overall pick, they wanted to add one more piece to their defense and tried to swap back to the first round for Phillips, according to Mike Klis of 9 News in Denver.
The Broncos didn’t have enough trade ammunition to get ahead of the Dolphins, putting Phillips in 18th place overall. But if Phillips had fallen in the 1920s, Denver general manager George Paton was ready to take it one step further.
Denver made a trade after taking Surtain, but not until Day 2, when the Broncos moved from No. 40 to No. 35 to retire North Carolina. Javonte Williams.
