Miami Cancer Institute opened on the Baptist Hospital campus in 2017, says Dr. Zinner, and now joins a number of other in-demand lines of service that have opened at Baptist Health’s new wellness and medical complex in Plantation in the past four months.

The 112,000 square foot complex at 1228 South Pine Island Road just north of I-595 brings together a full range of integrated health and wellness services – including cancer care, cardiology, orthopedics, spine care, emergency care, primary care, endocrinology and more – all under a roof.

“As part of Baptist Health, the Miami Cancer Institute provides cancer services from the Florida Keys to Palm Beach County,” said Dr. Zinner. “We are proud to pave the way for new and better treatments that help more patients overcome and survive cancer.”

Patients in Plantation can expect the same level of advanced, personalized cancer care, innovative clinical research and comprehensive support services available in Miami, said Dr. Zinner. “There is extensive on-site diagnostic imaging and an outpatient surgery center that allows overnight stays.” For very complex surgeries, says Dr. Zinner, Plantation patients receive free transportation to and from Baptist Hospital in Miami for their surgery.

Baptist Health’s multidisciplinary cancer care team in Plantation includes breast medical oncologists, a radiation oncologist and a state-of-the-art, full-service infusion suite, says Dr. Zinner. He adds that consultation hours will soon be offered by surgical and medical oncologists specializing in head and neck, breast, endocrine and gastrointestinal cancers, as well as gynecological, urological and orthopedic oncology.

One of those specialists is John P. Diaz, MD, deputy chief of gynecological oncology at Baptist Health’s Miami Cancer Institute, which provides comprehensive gynecological cancer care, including robotic and minimally invasive surgery, as well as gynecological surgery for benign conditions. Dr. Diaz, who also serves as the medical director of the Plantation Outpatient Surgery Center, says the new facility fulfills a real need for Broward residents.

Lauren Carcas, MD works closely with Dr. Diaz from the Miami Cancer Institute in Plantation, where she specializes in breast cancer treatment. As a medical oncologist, Dr. Carcas as the patient’s primary cancer care physician, diagnosing and treating the disease using all available therapies, including chemotherapy, hormonal therapy, biologic therapy, and targeted therapy.

Dr. Carcas warns its breast cancer patients to be extra vigilant about the possibility of ovarian cancer. “A family history of breast or colorectal cancer has been linked to an increased risk of ovarian cancer,” she says. “The same inherited mutation in certain genes that cause these cancers can also increase the risk of ovarian cancer.” Because ovarian cancer screening isn’t effective or easy, says Dr. Carcas know the symptoms is crucial for early detection of the disease. And for patients at risk, she adds, genetic testing is available at the Miami Cancer Institute in Plantation.
