A baby boy died of injuries suffered when Mississippi police shot his murder-suspected father, authorities said Tuesday.
The month-old was traveling with his father, 30-year-old Eric Derell Smith, who was wanted in connection with an investigation into double homicide in Louisiana, officials said.
Smith was shot while attempting arrest in Mississippi and despite “the best efforts of medical personnel, the child died as a result of the injuries sustained,” said a statement by Biloxi Maj police. Christopher De Back.
The deadly chain of events began Monday in Baker, Louisiana when Smith allegedly shot his ex-girlfriend, 32-year-old Christin Parker, and her 26-year-old nephew, Brandon Parker, at approximately 11:30 a.m. CDT, according to the East Baton Sheriff’s Office. Rouge.
Smith then fled east with the child, who had lived with his mother, Parker, in a blue Nissan Altima, a sheriff’s spokeswoman said.
Biloxi police learned that Smith had crossed the Mississippi on Interstate 10, and at milestone 40, the suspect “drove into the grass median strip and got stuck” at approximately 3:00 p.m., according to De Back’s statement.
“When the suspect exited the vehicle, there was a shooting. The suspect received medical attention, but died as a result of injuries sustained,” added De Back. “The youngster was injured and taken to a local medical facility for treatment.”
